Another reminder to not drive distracted

We've talked about it before on this blog and the stories of tragedy are too numerous to count, but we'll say it again: never text and drive. Sadly, we experienced another stark reminder of this important message in early December and now two more families are grieving.

A teenage girl was driving with her friend on Interstate 380 around the middle of the night when the car was rammed by a semi truck. The girl was live streaming on Facebook at the moment of the crash and a video of the event was later posted on social media, showing the two girls talking just before the lights of the tractor trailer enveloped their vehicle. Authorities say they aren't sure why the girls were driving so slowly, but it's possible that distracted driving played a role.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was uninjured and there was no word from officials whether he would be facing charges.

It's heartbreaking to see two young lives cut short so soon, but the accident serves as a horrific reminder of the dangers of distracted driving. All it takes is a split second with your eyes off the road or your attention elsewhere to change your life forever. And here's the tough part: even if you are following all the rules of the road, there are people who are driving drunk and distracted on New York's roads.

The grieving families of victims not only have to deal with the tragedy of the car accident, but they also have medical expenses, lost wages and funeral costs to worry about. That's why it can sometimes be a good idea to speak with an attorney about the accident. He or she may be able to help get much-needed compensation for the victims.
