6 common medical conditions caused by car accidents

On Behalf of | Mar 20, 2023 | Auto Accident Injuries |

The aftermath of an injurious car accident can range from inconvenient to devastating. While some accidents are minor, others can be debilitating.

These are just a few of the most common injuries caused by car accidents.

1. Whiplash

One of the most common injuries that occurs after major and minor accidents, whiplash results when the victim’s head is forced in a rapid back-and-forth movement. Whiplash puts pressure on the neck muscles and spine. As a result, the victim may suffer from pain and dizziness, among other symptoms that may not manifest until hours or days after a crash.

2. Concussion

When the brain rattles in the skull, it can sustain damage. Those injuries may cause the victim to feel confused, dizzy and fatigued. In some cases, the victim may also lose consciousness.

3. Fractured skull

If the head suffers a blow or strike, then there’s a possibility that the skull may break. If the skull suffers a crack or shatters, then the victim’s brain may be affected as well. In some cases, a blow to the head or bone shards can injure the brain and cause permanent damage.

4. Herniated disc

The spine is a series of vertebrae. Each vertebra is cushioned with sacks that absorb shock and protect nerves. A car accident may shift or burst these sacks, causing a herniated disc, which can lead to extreme pain and mobility issues for the victim.

5. Paralysis

The brain sends signals down the spine and to limbs, controlling motor functions and senses. When the spine is injured, these signals may be severed and the victim may experience paralysis. Paralysis can limit the control and senses, causing a victim to lose control over partial or entire body parts.

6. PTSD

While many injuries caused by car accidents are physical, there are some that are classified as mental conditions. For example, people may experience post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after experiencing a traumatic event, like a crash. PTSD may lead to depression and anxiety, which can be highly debilitating.
