Should I get medical attention after an accident?

Traffic congestions, construction sites and inattentive pedestrians are a major source of frustration for many New York motorists. Though proper time management and responsible driving behavior can help alleviate some of the stress you experience during your daily commute, these actions are not always enough to prevent motor vehicle accidents. If you find yourself in a motor vehicle collision, one of the first things you should do is get medical attention, even if you feel fine.

Brain and spinal cord injuries are common after car accidents, and their symptoms do not always present in obvious ways. Though you may feel a little sore, bruised or have a few scratches, it is very possible there is more serious trauma lurking in your body. The stress, excitement and adrenaline racing through your body from the collision can mask symptoms of injuries, as well. Without immediate and follow-up medical attention, what appear to be minor or nonexistent trauma can manifest into more serious auto accident trauma and injuries later on.

Proper medical attention can improve the outcome

You may not want to incur any new medical expenses, but proper examination and diagnostics can rule out the presence of severe health complications. Pain and tenderness occur after damage to tissues and organ systems, and it can take hours or days for you to realize the pain and discomfort you feel are from the accident. Immediate and follow-up medical care can also identify trauma you may not realize is there. Early medical intervention for potential car accident injuries can lead to better treatment and recovery outcomes.

Delays in medical treatment can cause additional complications

Accident victims are eligible to sue liable parties for compensation. Delays in diagnosis and treatment also put your health and recovery at risk and can make proving your personal injury claim more difficult. Immediate and subsequent medical treatment can prove the existence of your injuries and their severity and help substantiate your right to damages for your pain and suffering.
