See a doctor even if you feel OK after a car crash

Being the victim of a car crash may be a new experience for you. Even a minor rear-end collision can be scary, and you will feel shaky at the very least.

You should seek a medical evaluation, even if you feel OK. Symptoms of an underlying injury may not be immediately apparent, and there is a reason for that.

Reacting to impact

A vehicle collision involves a great amount of force. For example, if the back of your car is on the receiving end of a crash, the impact can cause your head to snap back and forth. Once your nerves settle down a bit, you may feel fine. However, this is probably because the impact has released adrenaline and endorphins. For the time being, they will block pain and help you cope with the event.

Seeking medical care

The sooner you see a doctor, the sooner you can receive a diagnosis in case there are hidden injuries. If the doctor does not find anything during the examination, he or she will likely caution you about delayed symptoms that might turn up within hours or days. These could include headaches, dizziness, blurry vision, memory issues, restlessness and difficulty concentrating. Symptoms such as these might indicate that you suffered a concussion.

Experiencing other issues

A minor collision can also result in damage to muscles, ligaments or tendons. You could experience neck or shoulder pain, back pain or numbness. You might notice some swelling or problems with mobility in the hours after the accident.

Providing a link

Prompt medical care will ensure that your doctor can provide a report that links your injuries directly to the car crash. You must also follow your doctor’s orders diligently. The medical tie-in will be critical when you file a claim with an insurance company. In seeking prompt medical care, you are doing the right thing for your well-being as well as the financial compensation to which you are entitled.
