What to do if you suspect nursing home abuse

Choosing to settle your parents or grandparents in a nursing home is not an easy decision. It's one which takes a lot of time, money and consideration. But what makes it harder is finding out they haven't been treated with the care and dignity that they deserve.

Often due to poorly trained staff or malicious intention of profit making, many nursing homes simply are not capable of or deliberately do not provide an appropriate level of care to its residents. In any case, this can breed both abuse and neglect resulting in various nursing home abuse injuries.

Negligence of a loved one, be it for any reason, can be worrying and can even cause you to lose hope in the system. However, if you notice a number of random falls and broken bones experienced by your family member whenever you visit, it's worth a second look. Another common indicator of abuse or negligence can be malnutrition, dehydration, and even bed sores. In worst cases, there may be signs of physical or sexual abuse.

Elder abuse should be reported immediately upon the slightest suspicion, even if your suspicion has not been confirmed yet. A proper investigation can help conclude whether a senior is, in fact, a victim of abuse. Even if this is not proved through the investigation, the investigation can be helpful in providing the senior with information to help ensure that the senior remains protected from abuse.

In such cases, you can always consider hiring an attorney to make sure the nursing home doesn't get away without the facing consequences of its actions. The attorney will help you file a complaint and try to get compensation for your loved ones.
